JAL warned over pilot drinking culture again

Japan’s transport ministry will issue a second reprimand against Japan Airlines over continued instances of drinking by flight crew.

JAL was first served with a business improvement order by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry back in December last year.

That came about after a JAL co-pilot was convicted in London of being nearly 10 times over the limit for commercial pilots, and several other instances followed.

JAL tightened up its policy and strengthened testing of flight crew but further instances have occurred throughout this year.

"We will continue to strictly supervise the airline to ensure safe flying conditions are maintained," transport minister Kazuyoshi Akaba said.

It is rare for the ministry to issue a second reprimand to a company, the Japan Times reported.

Still, JAL is not alone in dealing with a drinking culture in the airline industry.

Four other Japanese airlines were warned by the ministry last year, and all later amended their alcohol screening policy.
