Jamaica gets sporty
Jamaica is working with sports specialist, Edwin Doran Travel, to establish itself as a destination for schools sports tours.
As part of its efforts, Destination Jamaica recently hosted a netball team from King Edwards School, Southampton, to play in a tournament with schools on the island.
Edwin Doran, part of Tui Sport, took the girls, Hampshire County Championship finalists, for a 10-day tour playing several under-17 teams from Kingston, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.
Elizabeth Fox, regional director of Jamaica Tourist Board for UK and Northern Europe, said: "The Jamaica Tourist Board has been working with Edwin Doran Travel for four years since first inviting the owner, Edwin Doran, to Jamaica for a recce and then in 2009 hosting nine school sports masters on a fact finding tour.
"This trip marked what is seen as the start of a drive by the company and the JTB, to open up Jamaica to UK and Ireland school tours ranging from netball, hockey, cricket and football in the future."
