Jon Platt fined and given 12-month conditional discharge
Jon Platt, the father who fought but lost a long-running legal battle over term-time holidays, has been fined £2,000 for taking his daughter on an unauthorised trip.
Platt, who had refused to pay an initial £120 fine for taking his daughter, then aged six, to Disney World Florida, was also given a 12-month conditional discharge.
Despite winning earlier legal battles, by arguing that his daughter had a satisfactory attendance record, his fight with the Isle of White Council went all the way to the Supreme Court in April, when he eventually lost.
Giving the judgment on Friday, Isle of Wight magistrate Jeannie Walker said the much-publicised case had cost taxpayers £140,000.
Speaking after the hearing Platt said he was disappointed by the verdict.
"I didn’t want to lose but there’s a part of me that is actually relieved," he told reporters.
