Junta kicks out Patong’s illegal vendors

Phuket’s scruffy Patong beach has been given a clean-up initiated on the orders of Thailand’s ruling military junta, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

Patong Beach is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist attractions, but recent years have seen the area populated by vendors selling cheap goods and offering services such as massages.

The clean-up, under the supervision of the NCPO, saw the removal of food stalls, massage huts and other illegal installations.

The clean-up patrols have been welcomed by local business people.

Further measures taking place in Phuket include clean-ups of four other beaches and a clampdown on illegal taxi services.
