Khoa Lak calls for curbs on illegal vendors

Wednesday, 19 Feb, 2008 0

KHAO LAK – Hoteliers in Khao Lak have expressed concern at the growing number of illegal vendors, which includes food stalls, beach masseurs and entertainment houses along the beach.

Vendors set up shop following Khao Lak’s recovery from the 2004 tsunami in Thailand, and are being blamed for destroying the attractiveness of the beach.

Businesses that pay rent and taxes for commercial activities are complaining that they are undercut by these illegal activities.

Local businessmen fear that Khao Lak will degenerate into Phuket’s Patong Beach and lose its attractiveness to families and nature lovers.

Currently, Khao Lak has approximately 70 hotels with 4,000 rooms and welcomed 1.8 million visitors in 2007.
