KLM boosts aerospace sector with massive aircraft order

Thursday, 02 Apr, 2002 0

Dutch airline KLM has announced details of a massive fleet replacement programme which will reduce the number of aircraft types it operates from four to three.

Part one of a two phase programme will see KLM replace the 12 Boeing 747-300 aircraft it currently operates with eight Boeing 777-200ER aircraft and three Boeing 747-400ERF freighters. The first of the new aircraft will be delivered late 2003, with the last Boeing 747-300 phased out before 2005. KLM is currently still negotiating with various parties on its choice of engines for the new aircraft.

For the second phase of the programme KLM is negotiating the replacement of its ten MD-11s and twelve Boeing 767-300ERs with a combination of A330-200s and additional Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.

KLM said the time was right to order new aircraft as “the market for aircraft purchase is very favourable.”

Meanwhile state owned Indian Airlines has placed a $2billion order with Boeing rival Airbus for 43 A320 aircraft. However the proposed purchase still needs approval by the country’s Public Investment Board.
