Lady Liberty: Give me your huddled masses…but not for the “foreseeable future”
After reopening on the Sunday before Hurricane Sandy hit, the Statue of Liberty itself, Liberty Island and Ellis Island will all be closed "for the foreseeable future."
NBC News reports that although Lady Liberty herself came through the storm unscathed, the grounds around both islands have been flooded and neither island has power. Mindi Rambo, a spokesperson for the National Parks of New York Harbor told NBC that a team of experts would be visiting the islands to assess damage.
The Statue of Liberty’s Facebook page shows before and after Sandy images of the dock on Liberty Island: a long, prominent dock before, an iron skeleton after.
The page urges visitors who had bought tickets to go to www.statuecruises.com for refunds.
On the Statue’s Facebook page, New York tourist-to-be Andy Hooper wrote:
"Grateful to hear everyone is safe. I’m sad though because we will be coming to NYC Dec 15th and I may never be back again. I can’t imagine my trip to the Big Apple without seeing Lady Liberty up close. Godspeed on the repair efforts."
