Lake Tahoe ski resort changes name to remove ‘derogatory’ slur
The Lake Tahoe ski resort with the now considered ‘derogatory and offensive’ name has unveiled its new moniker. Known as Squaw Valley since 1949, it is now called Palisades Tahoe.
It decided to ditch the Squaw Valley name a year ago following much national discourse over misogynistic and racist terms stemming from the ‘me too’ movement and especially the George Floyd incident.
Indigenous leaders in California had long campaigned to get the name changed and the resort consulted with the Washoe Tribe before announcing the new name.
