Leaving town by airplane? Colorado is the cheapest, North Dakota priciest

Monday, 25 May, 2012 0

Colorado flyers live in the state least expensive to fly out of for those going on a domestic trip, while those are paying the most for such trips live in North Dakota, according to new data from ARC.

Roundtrip flights originating in Colorado cost an average of $171 or 18% below the national average of $207, according to ARC (Airlines Report Corp.).

Flyers who live in North Dakota and want to leave in an airplane pay the most, an average of $270 or almost one third above the national average.

Low-fare states after Colorado were: Florida, $175; Missouri, $177; Maryland, $178 and Nevada, $179. States with the highest roundtrip domestic airfare after North Dakota were: Wyoming, $264; New Jersey, $263; Kentucky, $243 and Arkansas, $240.

"Although there is no one reason why this deviation should be true, many factors could contribute, including overall traffic volume, level of competition, presence of low-cost carriers, and demographic characteristics of the traveling population such as the composition of business vs. leisure passengers," said Chuck Thackston, managing director of data and analytics at ARC
