Liverpool Airport re-opens

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has re-opened and says normal operations have resumed.

The airport was closed until 11.15pm last night after a private plane skidded off the runway at 6am yesterday morning.

The airport apologised to passengers, some of whom took to social media to complain about lack of information from the airport and from airlines.

Even some workers at the airport complained on Twitter that they had been kept badly informed.

A spokesman for the airport said it was ‘naturally disappointed’ to have received comments complaints from some individuals.

He said regular updates were provided throughout the day on the website and social media and flight information updates were provided by the airline handling agents, who work on behalf of airlines.

He stressed that the airport received many positive comments from passengers and others affected by the disruption, understanding the difficulty of the situation.

"The process to remove the aircraft was extremely difficult, which is why this took until the late evening for the airport to re-open," he said.

The plane that overran the runway was carrying three crew and one passenger – Liverpool FC managing owner Mike Gordon – but there were no reported injuries.

Arriving flights were cancelled or diverted to Manchester throughout the day.
