London City gets go-ahead for expansion
London City Airport has been given the go-ahead for a £200 million expansion, which will allow it to almost double passenger numbers.
Newham Council has approved the plans, which include a 260-bedroom four-star on-site hotel, the expansion of the terminal, a new taxi-way and additional parking stands for newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft, which will allow airlines to fly to more destinations from the Docklands airport.
The expansion is expected to create 2,000 jobs and increase the airport’s annual aircraft movements from 70,000 to 111,000 by 2023.
The number of aircraft stands will rise from 18 to 25.
Building work is expected to start by the end of this year, subject to final approval, and airlines are expected to start operating newer aircraft from the Docklands airport as early as next year.
Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport said: "The development of the airport will culminate in 2023 when, having constructed seven new aircraft stands, a parallel taxiway and terminal extensions to the west and to the east, the airport will be welcoming some six million passengers every year."
