London Mayor reassures visitors after terror attack
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has reassured visitors to London that the city is safe after tourists were caught up in a terror attack in Westminster yesterday afternoon.
"Londoners should be aware that there will be additional armed and non-armed poilice officers on our streets in order to keep Londoners, and all those visiting our city, safe," he said.
"I want to reassure all Londoners, and all our visitors, not to be alarmed. Our city remains one of the safest in the world."
Four people were killed, including a police officer and the British-born attacker who stabbed the unarmed officer outside the Houses of Parliament.
The attacker smashed a 4×4 vehicle, hired through Enterprise Car Hire, into railings near Westminster Hall and stabbed the officer.
Before that, he had mowed down pedestrians on the Westminster Bridge, killing three and injuring at least 40 more. Seven are in a critical condition.
The injured included 12 Britons, three French children on a school trip, two Romanians, four South Koreans, two Greeks, and one person each from Germany, Poland, Ireland, China, Italy and the US.
Seven arrests have been made in connection with the incident, but the attacker is believed to have operated alone.
Many tourists were trapped on the nearby London Eye, which was shut down during the incident. Westminster tube station was closed and buses were diverted away from the area.
Thames river cruise operator CityCruises moved its London Showboat cruise to depart from Tower Pier instead of Westminster.
London Duck Bus Tours halted its tours but is operating again today, taking an alternative route because some streets remain closed.
