London slips in popularity stakes

London has dropped from first to ninth in Cheapflights’ top searches during February.

The capital topped the list in the same month last year but has been replaced by New York.

Tenerife moved up a place to second, followed by Malaga, Alicante and Amsterdam, which all improved on their 2005 positions. Dublin, Paris and Barcelona also moved ahead of London.

Cheapflights.co.uk chief executive David Soskin put a positive spin on London’s slump.

“Searches on flights to London did see a dip after July 2005 but London always remain in the top ten on our flight searches,” he said. “This is set to continue in the short term with the summer season imminent but also in the long term with the Olympics in 2012.”
