Lowest-cost hotel booking engine: Travelocity

Travelocity is the travel industry’s low-price leader, according to a new independent study conducted by Cornell University.

The non-commissioned study from the college’s School of Hotel Administration and the Center for Hospitality Research organization studied the five major booking channels.

Said Gary M. Thompson, professor of operations management:

“Our study showed that Travelocity had the lowest cost and the smallest variance in excess cost across segments, such as seven percent in luxury segments and five percent in upscale segments.”

Hotel Web sites had the second lowest cost overall, he added, but their channel showed more variance in excess costs.

The study looked at 137 possible booking dates.
