Lucky escape for travellers as Palma Airport roof collapses
Holidaymakers just arrived in Mallorca had a narrow escape after a roof collapsed in the arrivals area of Palma Airport.
Glass and debris crashed onto the floor near the baggage reclaim area.
An emergency alert was activated in the arrivals hall forcing passengers to be evacuated to another area of the airport.
Airport workers said it was a ‘miracle’ no one had been seriously injured.
An investigation was underway within hours.
Airports authority AENA later said the roof collapse was due to the build up of debris from construction work on the glass roof close to the baggage claim entrance.
“The airport is analysing what happened to determine responsibilities if necessary,” an airport spokesperson said.
The roof collapse caused a large cloud of dust as shattered glass covered a small area.
An airport worker told local media it was difficult to breath and people were slipping due to the buildup of dust on the floor.
