Madrid rocked by riot
The Spanish capital Madrid has been rocked by a riot in the heart of the city which left at least 20 people injured.
Police and demonstrators clashed in the streets surrounding Puerta del Sol, a popular meeting point in the city centre, where anti-government protests have been held since May.
More than 200 police had been deployed on Thursday to close the square for the third day running and in the evening hundreds of demonstrators marched across the city to protest against the closure.
According to eye witness reports, riot police charged into the crowd near the interior ministry on the Paseo de la Castellana.
The protests in Madrid began in mid-May and were indeed gathering momentum when Advantage Travel Conference was held there in the spring, with several marches taking place during the event.
They have since spread to other Spanish cities via Facebook and Twitter.
The Foreign Office has not changed its travel advice for Spain.
