While internet bookings continue to rise, the major players Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz are all losing market share. That’s the conclusion of a new Hitwise Industry Report that said the major companies are losing market share to smaller providers such as Trip Advisor, Cheap Tickets and Hotwire. The demographic makeup of visitors in the travel category is dominated by females (58.3%), over 35 years of age (69.9%), with household earnings over $75,000 a year (41%). Hitwise also found over 31% of all visits to sites in the travel category are referred from other travel related sites. In addition, of all successful search terms that resulted in visitors to the travel category, 16 of the top 30 terms were brand-related.
