Majority of Cruise Asia sailings cancelled as ship is sold
The majority of a programme of Far East cruises marketed in the UK by Carnival UK under the Cruise Asia brand has been cancelled.
P&O Cruises Australia has sold the ship Pacific Sky which was due to operate the itineraries from Singapore to Malaysia and Thailand between February and October 2006.
But as the 1,200-passenger ship is to leave the fleet on May 6 all departures after April 29 have been cancelled. The 21-year-old vessel has been sold to Spanish cruise operator Pullmantur Cruises.
Cruise Asia sailings were being sold for around £1,600 for 14 nights but it is not known how many bookings were taken.
P&O Cruises Australia managing director Gavin Smith said Regal Princess would replace Pacific Sky in 2007.
“Unfortunately this will necessitate the cancellation of some of our Asian cruise season and we apologise unreservedly to all passengers affected,” Smith said.
Pacific Sky had earned the title of Australia’s most popular cruise ship, carrying more than 250,000 passengers since it arrived in Australia in November 2000, he added.
“Interest in Pacific Sky from potential buyers opened the way for us to replace her with Regal Princess, which is well suited to the Australia/New Zealand market,” explained Smith.
Regal Princess will be tailored to the Australian market before its deployment in late 2007 to join 1,900-passenger Pacific Sun and 1,400-passenger Pacific Star, he said.
