Maldives lifts state of emergency early
The Maldives has lifted a 30-day state of emergency just a week after it was imposed.
Foreign affairs minister Dunya Maumoon said the government was looking forward to getting the country ‘back on a more normal footing’.
The state of emergency was issued last week after an alleged assassination attack on President Abdulla Yameen.
It gave the security forces more power to arrest suspects and suspend freedom and assembly and movement, but it didn’t affect holidaymakers.
However, US investigators said they hadn’t found any evidence that the blast on Yameen’s boat last month was an assassination attempt.
"We are pleased that this matter has been dealt with so swiftly. We are looking forward to getting the country back on a more normal footing," said Maumoon.
