Mali Dogon Country Website Launches

The Tourism Office of the Mopti Region has just launched a new website dedicated to the promotion of Dogon Country, www.dogoncountry.com, with the help of the Global Sustainable Tourism Alliance (GSTA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Regarded today as the jewel of tourism in Mali, Dogon country is one of the most fascinating tourism destinations of sub-Saharan Africa. Implemented by the GSTA, an alliance of leading organizations in sustainable tourism development, this project has launched a new promotional website for the region, in collaboration with the Tourism Office of Mali (OMATHO) of the Mopti region.

The website is now the best source of information for prospective travelers to the region. Highly aware of the need to ensure a sustainable development of tourism in the region, the USAID is currently funding this project, which has a goal to help provide income-earning opportunities with fairly distributed benefits to all stakeholders while respecting and protecting the natural resources in the local communities.

Very beautifully designed, the website presents the region and its main tourism attractions, before detailing its wonderful cultural and natural heritage. It also lists the guides and tour operators operating in the region, and presents the different villages of the region and their lodging possibilities. The website encourages visitors to travel responsibly by understanding and respecting the intricate culture of the Dogons, and by participating in the conservation of their beautiful yet threatened environment. After spending a few minutes on this colorful new webportal highlighting stunning  photos and videos, visitors will invariably want to dive into the intriguing and fascinating world of Dogon country.

Dogon Country has magnificent landscapes, beautiful dances and masks, exotic mosques, and villages carved in pink sandstone on the cliff side. Dogon country is one of the only three sites in Africa to have been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for both its cultural and natural interest. Approximately 150 kilometres long and its highest peak rising 1,115 meters (3,660 feet), a spectacular escarpment offers shelter to the Dogon people as well as a unique cultural tourism experience.

The Dogon people are known for their art, especially their masks which are used in their complex rites and rituals. Their history is marked by the will and stubbornness to remain authentic and preserve their traditional way of life. Traditional architecture throughout a Dogon village consists of a series of unique and exceptional mud buildings. Trekking through the region is the most popular option chosen by travelers to explore this fascinating region.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Alliance (GSTA) is a partnership of leading international organizations working together with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to apply a holistic and market-driven approach to development of sustainable tourism. The GSTA is currently working in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Mali and Montenegro with a goal to support development and promotion of sustainable tourism products with an emphasis on emerging markets with unique tourism attracts or high biodiversity areas. The international and local alliance members are innovators and leaders in a range of disciplines, combining resources and expertise to develop high quality sustainable tourism with the greatest potential for attracting international visitors.    GSTA’s Managing Partners include: Academy for Educational Development (AED), George Washington University, Solimar International and The Nature Conservancy.
