Malta, Balearics likely to make green list

Wednesday, 24 Jun, 2021 0

The government announces its review of the traffic light system for international travel this afternoon with speculation growing that some holiday islands could make the green list this time.

Even those ministers have been playing down any major changes, The Times reported that destinations including Malta, Madeira and the Balearic Islands will become green.

Environment Secretary George Eustice told Sky News the government would be cautious in making any revisions.

"We want to get to a position where we can support people who want to travel, but it is difficult. We are being cautious," he said.

The review comes as German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on EU countries to impose mandatory quarantine on UK travellers.

"In our country, if you come from Great Britain you have to go into quarantine and that’s not the case in every European country, and that’s what I would like to see," she said.

The review may also see fundamental changes to the amber list protocols that every vaccinated would-be holidaymaker has been hoping for.

However if this is the case, it is unlikely to become effective for several weeks

Health Secretary Matt Hancock supports a move to allow fully vaccinated travellers to skip quarantine on return from an amber list destination which currently makes up most of Europe.
