Margaret River battles devastating bush fires

Monday, 24 Nov, 2011 0

Firefighters were today continuing to fight a huge blaze that has destroyed homes and large parts of bushland in Western Australia’s South West.

Residents and tourists have been evacuated from parts of the Margaret River region at a time when school leavers are expected to flood the region for their annual celebrations.

A major caravan park has been closed, along with roads in the immediate area of the fires. Accommodation units are feared to be among the fire’s victims.

Vineyards in a region that produces many of Australia’s top wines are not directly affected by the fire.

Guitars signed by Cold Chisel along with band memorabilia will be auctioned at Sandalford Winery on Saturday in a fundraiser for those who have lost property and possessions in the bushfires.

The band’s concert at Sandalford Wines will go ahead, the winery said.
