Over 9,300 flights cancelled in the United Stated due to massive winter storm
Some 5,195 cancelled on Friday, 4,142 on Saturday in the USA alone. The winter storm which is affecting North America on a line stretching along 2,000 miles (3,200 km) from New England to Southern Texas. Temperatures in the Upper North of the USA as well as Canada are fluctuating between -10°C and -20°C with heavy snow and ice rain expected.
According to the website Flightaware, which tracks air movements including cancellations and delays, the USA alone experienced on Friday and Saturday 9, 337 cancelled flights on Friday and Saturday. Sunday will see another wave of heavy cancellations as the storm is due to continue until Monday. This number is one of the worst every seen in the USA in recent years.
By comparison, FlightAware data shows the previous worst day in the past year was November 9, during the peak of the U.S. government shutdown, when airlines canceled more than 1,900 flights.
Most affected airports were the one in the Southwest of the country -and particularly Dallas airports. DFW experienced a cancellation rate of 86% -only beaten by Oklahoma City with a cancellation rate of 87%. It was followed by Dallas Love Field at 63%. Other southern airports were heavily affected by the storm: Tulsa saw 64% of cancelled flights, Nashville 60%, Charlotte 34% and Memphis 30%.
For this Sunday, Flightaware has already published data for cancelled flights. For now it stands at 304. But it could rapidly change…
