Massive snowstorm delays East Coast travel
Major parts of the US today can sympathize with the closure of Heathrow and major delays throughout Europe because of a major snowstorm, but the slowdown in after-Christmas Day travel was much shorter and far less disruptive on this side of the Atlantic.
Air traffic today was returning to normal Tuesday in the wake of a massive snowstorm in New England and the East Coast that cancelled thousands of flights and snarled roadways. Among its impacts:
—Central Park in New York City was blanketed with 20 inches of snow.
—Parts of Connecticut had up to two feet of snow.
—Parts of the NCY subways were stalled in snow drifts, trapping some passengers on board.
—There was 31 inches of snow in parts of New Jersey, setting records.
—The storm brought high winds to the east Coast — in some cases as much as 80 miles per hour.
—Amtrak was also returning to normal.
Even the National Football League was impacted with a planned Sunday night game in Philadelphia cancelled because of a huge snow forecast.
