Three men have appeared in court charged in connection with the murder of teacher Michaela McAreavey who was strangled while on honeymoon in Mauritius.
Two are charged with murder and one with conspiracy to murder. They are Abinash Treebhoowoon, 29, Sanbit Moneea, 41, and Ray Theekay, 33.
Michaela, 27, had returned to her room from the restaurant at the Legends Hotel complex to retrieve some biscuits to eat with her cup of tea when she was strangled by an intruder who had entered her room just two minutes earlier.
The timings were gleaned from the room’s keycard which tracks times of entry and departure.
The Legends Hotel complex is in the centre of Grand Gaube close to Grand Bay, a popular tourist resort in the north east of the idyllic island.
Tourism Minister Nando Bodha said: "This is the first time that something like this has happened here. Those who have been to Mauritius know that it is a peaceful place.”
The men will now face trial at a later date.
