Melbourne Games ready for bird flu and anything else!
With a view to the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Health Minister Bronwyn Pike has said that the State of Victoria will be to ready to respond to any health outbreak, natural disaster or terrorist attack.
Ms Pike said that more than $5.2 million in health funding would be used to stockpile extra drugs to tackle any outbreak of influenza or bird flu and the money, provided through the Commonwealth Games budget, would also be used to buy protective clothing, breathing equipment and medical supplies for ambulances across Victoria and that the state medical stockpile would supplement the national reserves.
Ms Pike said “The new equipment will provide paramedics with a greater degree of protection if they are called to a major disaster centre or site of a terrorist attack.”
“Victoria’s public health system has plans in place to be able to provide for around 1000 casualties within a 24 hour period and to respond to a terrorism attack or other disaster,” she said.
