Mexico tourism goal: Europe-bound US visitors
Mexico’s main tourism goal this year is to attract US travelers who usually choose Europe as their vacation destination, says Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism Rodolfo Elizondo-Torres.
He also announced that tourism in Mexico last year brought in almost $13 billion, an increase of 6% from 2006.
Americans now make up two-thirds of foreign visitors to Mexico. But international travel is on the upswing.
“The diversification of Mexican tourism offerings has turned into positive results, with an increase of 5.7 percent in the average expenditure of foreign visitors,” explained Mr Elizondo.
The main countries sending tourists to Mexico, aside from the US, are Canada, the United Kingdom and Spain.
The cruise industry is also growing. Mr Elizondo reported that 6.8 million passengers arrived via Mexico’s coastal ports, a 5% increase over 2006.
