Michelin Pub of the Year? Yes, you guessed it’s in Wales!
With The Mole’s Welsh connections The Mole had to run this story about The Bell at Skenfrith, Monmouthsire being declared the Michelin Pub of the year 2007.
The Bell at Skenfrith was re-opened in 2001 by William and Janet Hutchings and their family, after extensive refurbishment and it has maintained its historic context while carefully and thoughtfully decorated with flagstone floors, oak beams and antique furniture coupled with sumptuous sofas, give The Bell a classic welcoming atmosphere of comfort and relaxation.
The Bell is a fabulous seventeenth century pub and it occupies the classic British country pub location, not only overlooking a Norman castle but also the swiftly flowing River Monnow and is also nestled in some of the most beautiful and unspoiled Monmouthshire countryside.

Even better is that many of the vegetables, herbs and salads come from the pub’s own kitchen garden, with the restaurant at The Bell having also won many awards for its food, including 2 AA Rosettes and the full a la carte menu changing regularly and offering locally sourced seasonal food.
Prices range from £20 a head for a three-course lunch and £30 a head for a three-course dinner and on Sundays, there is a set lunch menu and a la carte in the evening and in good weather, guests can also eat outside on the garden terrace. Interestingly, they also offer a special menu for children with meals from the organic food specialist ‘Miniscoff’.
Skenfrith is the ideal place for long country walks and there is a variety available such as the Three Castles’ or Offa’s Dyke Walks, two of the more well-known and challenging!
The Bell also has some fabulous rooms with beams and low ceilings – just as you would expect in a 17thC pub!
The Bell is featured in Michelin’s Eating out in Pubs guide 2007, please visit www.michelin.co.uk or www.skenfrith.co.uk for more.
