Austria revealed as country with the biggest increase in visitor numbers
Government figures suggest that Austria is the fastest-growing destination for British holidaymakers, while Israel is the country that has seen the biggest decline in visitors.
Research by the Office for National Statistics reveal that Austria has seen an increase of 37 per cent in the past three years, largely, it seems because there has been a huge increase in the number of no-frills flights to and from the country.
Oskar Hinteregg, of the Austrian National Tourist Office, said: “This is despite recent research showing that two-thirds of Britons apparently think that it snows all year round in Austria. In fact our lakes were warmer than anywhere else in the Mediterranean Sea last summer: 22C.”
Second in the list came the former Yugoslavia, with a 32 per cent increase, third was Turkey with 23 per cent, fourth was New Zealand with 21 per cent, fifth equal were “central and eastern Europe” and “the Middle East excluding Israel”, with 20 per cent. The biggest fallers were: 1. Israel, 62 per cent down; 2. Iceland, 29 per cent down; 3. Canada, minus 18 per cent; 4. United States, 16 per cent down; and 5. Gibraltar, down nine per cent.
