Move to protect ports from terrorism
The European Commission wants to reinforce security measures at ports across the continent to protect them from terrorist attacks. According to the online news provider Ananova, the Commission document produced for consideration by EU governments says ports have the potential to be vulnerable targets – with huge consequences if they were targeted by terrorists. The EU transport commissioner Loyola de Palacio reportedly said: “Ports must be protected as much as possible against unlawful, illegal acts, including terrorist attacks. They must not be easy targets. Too much is at stake – passengers, vessels, national and international trade and essential installations.” The proposal reportedly suggested that European governments should agree “common port security plans, the appointment of security officers and security authorities establishing links between the political level and arrangements on the ground.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad
