Multicultural events and conventions means big business in Philadelphia with a multimillion dollar economic impact expected this summer in the city.

Multicultural Affairs Congress (PHLDiversity) a division of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau which focuses on multicultural meetings, projects more than $19.2 million in economic impact generated from multicultural conventions during the summer season.

"Our city’s diverse landscape of dining, hotels and attractions offer value to convention attendees that means meeting planners keep coming back," said Greg DeShields, executive director of PHLDiversity.

A busy season kicks off with 9,200 booked room nights for the Omega Psi Phi international fraternal convention from July 10-18.

The event will attract upwards of 6,000 attendees and bring in an estimated economic impact of $9.1 million.

Other large scale conventions booked in July and August include the National Black Nurses Association convention, the American Telugu Association Biennial Conference, the Teamsters National Black Caucus’ annual convention, and the annual conference of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, which alone is expected to boost the economy by $7.3 million.

Convention & Visitors Bureau CEO Jack Ferguson said Philly is also finding favor with an increasing number of overseas visitors.

"Since the launch of international marketing efforts in 2002, we’ve seen Philadelphia move from 21st to 13th place in ranking of overseas visitation," said Ferguson

"Our plans are to continue this momentum with new and innovative sales and marketing initiatives, including a focus on emerging target markets."

The city attracted 673,000 overseas visitors last year, an annual increase of 13% from 2012.
