Munich achieved the highest growth of any airports in Germany in 2025

Munich Airport once again recorded significant traffic growth in 2025. A total of 43.4 million passengers used the Southern air gateway which is also Lufthansa second major hub.

Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of 1.8 million passengers, marking a +4.4 percent increase in passenger growth. This leads to Munich Airport being the airport with the highest absolute passenger growth in the German-speaking region in 2025.

The number of flight movements also developed positively: with 337,000 takeoffs and landings, which was 3 percent higher than the previous year’s figure. Average seat occupancy reached 80.9 percent, confirming the high level of demand in air traffic.

Once again, European and intercontinental traffic were the main growth drivers. Traffic to European destinations and the Mediterranean region grew by 4.3 percent. Long-haul traffic developed particularly dynamically, increasing by 8.5 percent compared to 2024.

Munich Airport’s route network expanded in 2025 to include 232 destinations in Germany and 71 other countries worldwide. A total of 96 airlines regularly served the airport, including five all-cargo airlines.

Punctuality rates among the best in Europe

Despite continued strong passenger growth and external factors such as weather-related disruptions and airport operational restrictions due to drone sightings, Munich Airport further improved its on-time performance. In 2025, the punctuality rate rose to over 75 percent, placing the airport among the top three major hub in Europe in terms of punctuality.

The introduction of state-of-the-art CT scanners at security checkpoints has also helped to increase passenger throughput. Since April 2025, security screening in Terminal 2’s security screening has completely transitioned to this innovative technology, enabling 95 percent of passengers to pass through security in less than ten minutes. By the start of the 2026 summer vacation, additional screening lanes in Terminal 1 will also be equipped with the new CT technology. With the new scanners, the airport is taking a decisive step forward in its innovative modernization as a premium hub. The Free State of Bavaria alone is investing more than €45 million to equip all security checkpoints at Munich Airport with the latest technology.

The airport as a driving force for the whole of Bavaria

“The positive traffic development for 2025 shows that Munich Airport is growing dynamically and consistently expanding its services. This means that our hub remains an important junction for our passengers,“ says Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport. ”In addition to providing secure jobs at the airport, Munich Airport also contributes to the region’s enormous economic importance as a cargo hub. The airport is a driving force behind the region’s economic growth and prosperity, as well as that of the entire state of Bavaria.”
