Mush, mush, the great dogsled race in on again
Up to 50 mushers and their canine teams will embark on the 30th running of the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse, Yukon, on February 2.
During the 2013 race, which alternates start and finish points each year, teams will gather at the starting line in Whitehorse, Yukon, and traverse 1,000 miles of harsh, frozen terrain along the same historical mail delivery and gold-rush-era routes prospectors took from the late 1800s into the early 20th century.
Avid Yukon Quest fans can follow teams’ progress as they pass through 10 checkpoints along the way before reaching the finish line in Fairbanks around February 16.
Pre-race activities include a holiday open house party on December 7 in Fairbanks as well as a Meet the Mushers event on January 30 and Start and Draw Banquet on January 31 in Whitehorse.
