NCL issues health warning to guests
Norwegian Cruise Line has issued a health advisory to current and recent guests aboard Norwegian Epic.
Two recent guests on the ship have contracted Legionnaires’ disease, the cruise line revealed.
It informed guests currently on the 4,100-guest ship, which is on a 12-night Mediterranean sailing from Rome to Lisbon.
The advisory is also for guests who have recently sailed on the ship.
NCL said it is not yet clear whether they caught Legionnaires on the ship.
It is working with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify the source.
The Legionella bacteria is spread through water droplets often found in hot tubs, showers, and air conditioning systems.
“On the rare occasion that any past guests receive such a diagnosis, we work with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support their investigation efforts as part of their standard operating procedures,” the notice to guests said.
“If you have already disembarked and develop symptoms within 14 days of your cruise, seek medical attention right away.”
Legionnaires’ disease symptoms include fever, headache and muscle aches.
Although rare, similar advisories have been issued by cruise lines in recent years, with hot tub use often suspected as a source.
Royal Caribbean issued a Legionnaires advisory earlier this year, as did NCL in 2022.
