‘New’ American Airlines cleared for take-off

The European Commission has approved the American Airlines-US Airways merger.

"This represents one of the final milestones on our path to becoming the new American Airlines," AMR chairman president and CEO Tom Horton said.

Doug Parker, chairman and CEO of US Airways, and incoming CEO of the combined company, said the new American would benefit customers in the United States, Europe and across the world "by enhancing connectivity within the oneworld alliance and creating more options for travel both domestically and internationally".

American filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2011. The two companies received court approval for the merger in March.

Headquartered in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, the new American is expected to offer more than 6,700 daily flights to 336 destinations in 56 countries.
