New at the airport: The Centurion Lounge by Amex

Friday, 14 Mar, 2013 0

Even while it gives its best customers access to airline lounges around the country, American Express has quietly begun opening airport lounges of its own.

The first Centurion Lounge, at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, began a soft launch on February 26. Others will open in key US markets later this year.

American Express is not yet ready to discuss its plans. "We consider this a ‘test and learn,’ so didn’t launch with big fanfare," Amex spokesperson Desiree Fish told Travelmole.

"All we can share at the moment is that we are exploring possible locations for additional airport lounges in key markets where our Cardmembers live and frequently travel through. We will make our future plans public when they have been finalized."

Although the company operates a number of lounges overseas, this is the first time it will be operating lounges in the US market.

Amex views the opening of the lounges as an opportunity "to learn who is interested and what amenities Cardmembers like best, and to manage capacity to ensure that everyone has the best possible experience when they visit our lounges," the company said.

Therefore for now, Global Centurion Cardmembers and their invited guests (spouse or domestic partner and Cardmember’s children under 18, or up to two guests), will receive unlimited complimentary access to the lounges as part of their card benefits.

All other American Express Cardmembers can purchase an access key at the lounges, space permitting. Keys will cost $50 per person, per day. Cardmembers who purchase an access key may be accompanied by their children under 18.

Cardmembers also will get complimentary access to the lounge through a series of targeted offers.

Opening its own airport lounges allows Amex "to demonstrate our service ethos in a tangible way and gives us another touch point with our customers," the company said. Internal research shows there is a clear appetite among Cardmembers for a differentiated airport lounge experience in the U.S.
