New FCO warning for travellers
Visitors to Greece need to be aware of rise in attacks and rapes, according to the UK Foreign Office.
The Foreign Office has issued a new warning for travellers to Greece, saying that visitors to the country need to be aware of a rise in attacks on foreigners.
According to the FCO violent crime against tourists has increased by nearly 200 per cent, while the number of foreign women raped in Greece has doubled in the last four years.
There were 34 rapes of British citizens on holiday in Greece last year, compared to 17 in 1998.
A spokesman for the FCO told the Daily Telegraph: “We advise people to become familiar with their surroundings, ask the hotel to recommend reliable taxi firms and never accept lifts from strangers or passing acquaintances.”
Noel Josephides, of Sunvil Holidays, told the newspaper the violence could be attributed to the “disco culture” in Greek resorts. He said: “Youngsters go to these resorts, get drunk and wear next to nothing, so it is not surprising these things happen.” For the latest Foreign Office advice visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
