New Foreign Office advice for Venezuela
Venezuela: Britons no longer told to avoid troubled country
The Foreign Office has changed its advice for Venezuela, and British travellers are no longer being advised not to travel to the South American country. As reported by News From Abroad, the FCO warned in December that Britons should not go to the country, because of fast-rising political tension, a national strike that led to Venezuela grinding to a halt, and many violent demonstrations. Several people were killed when protests got out of hand. However, reports now suggest the situation has improved and the Foreign Office has changed its advice. However, Venezuela is still not the safest of countries; the advice still states: “Violent incidents can erupt at any time. Many Venezuelans carry guns, including when they attend political demonstrations. Most demonstrations are announced in advance in the local media, including the English language newspaper Daily Journal”. For the latest advice visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
