New government urged to recognise importance of aviation

The new UK coalition government must acknowledge the “crucial role” aviation will play in the the country’s economic recovery, according to Virgin Atlantic president Sir Richard Branson.

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat administration must ensure the decisions that are made do not risk damaging its long-term prospects.

Speaking on board the airline’s inaugural flight between London and Accra in Ghana Sir Richard  said: “Tomorrow the Queen, on behalf of her new Government, will set out the political agenda for the next 12 months.

“There will be plenty of time to debate the detail – on the potential damage of a per plane levy and its questionable legality under international aviation law, on how our industry’s growth can be compatible with robust carbon targets and how the competitiveness of the UK aviation industry can be promoted though any Bill relating to civil aviation.

“Aviation employs over half a million people both directly and in its supply chain alone in the UK.

“Its role in bringing tourists, business and finance to the country should not be underestimated, and we trust that this will be recognised in tomorrow’s legislative announcements."

He added: "It’s at times like this, as we launch a new service to Ghana, that I’m reminded exactly why we need a strong and competitive aviation industry.  Routes like this connect businesses, stimulate investment, enable passengers to experience new places and cultures, and maintain crucial links between friends and families living many thousands of miles apart.

“I think sometimes, amid stories of strikes and volcanic ash, it is forgotten that aviation is a great success story for the UK – a vibrant, liberalised industry which competes on the international stage and which is at the forefront of innovation as well as recognising its environmental responsibilities.

"It is also an industry which contributes billions to the national economy each year and of which Britain should be proud."
