New green guide to ferry crossings
Greentraveller.co.uk has launched an online ferry journey planner for foot passengers between the UK, Ireland and continental Europe.
The planner includes detailed information on public transport transfers to and from the ports, prices, sample itineraries, as well as direct links to book tickets.
Richard Hammond, chief executive and founder of greentraveller.co.uk, said: “Travelling as a foot passenger on a traditional ferry service is one of the greenest ways to travel between the UK, Ireland and the continent, yet it is often difficult to find information on how public transport links in with the vast network of ferry services at home and overseas.
“Our new online ferry journey planner shows how easy it can be to take the train or bus to a ferry port then hop across to Ireland or Continental Europe and continue the journey overland.”
The planner was put together with the help of the Passenger Shipping Association.
Director Bill Gibbons said: “We hope the section inspires and encourages a new generation of travellers to discover the treasures right on our doorstep and further afield, and reminds those who have forgotten, just how accessible and easy ferry travel can be.
“Not only are ferries reliable, flexible and great value – but you can rest assured that you are doing your bit for the environment.”
Latest figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) give the greenhouse gas emissions associated with transport as follows:
– Foot passenger on a ferry 22.54g CO2e per passenger kilometre
– Rail passenger on a Eurostar train 17.14g CO2e per passenger kilometer
– Air passenger on a domestic flight (between UK airports) 205.15g CO2e per passenger kilometer
– Air passenger on a short haul flight (UK to Central Europe) 116g CO2e per passenger kilometre.
