New Qantas Chair brings record of outstanding achievement
Incoming Qantas Chair Leigh Clifford will bring an outstanding record of corporate achievement to his new role with national carrier, according to peak tourism industry group TTF Australia (Tourism & Transport Forum).
TTF Australia Managing Director Christopher Brown today congratulated Mr Clifford on his appointment, and acknowledged the contribution of incumbent chairman Margaret Jackson.
“Leigh Clifford is one of Australia’s most successful corporate executives, leading the world’s second biggest mining company, Rio Tinto, until earlier this year” Mr Brown said.
“His experience will be invaluable for Qantas as it goes forward in the increasingly competitive global aviation industry.
“Mr Clifford and the Qantas Board will face a number of major challenges in the coming years, including the impact of climate change on travel patterns, and gaining access to growing international markets such as India and China.”
Mr Brown paid tribute to Margaret Jackson, who will finish her term as Chairman in November, saying, “During her chairmanship, the Qantas Board has grown and nurtured Australia’s national carrier to a position of global leadership.”
“We understand her decision to retire at this time and she goes with our best wishes and highest regard.”
“The tourism industry is greatly reassured to know that senior management, including Geoff Dixon, John Borghetti and Alan Joyce, will remain in place to make the transition to the new Chairman as smooth as possible.”
