New route planned for Fiji Airways
Fiji Airways plans to start flights to either Tokyo or Shanghai next year once it takes delivery of new A330-300 aircraft.
The carrier is yet to make a final decision which of the two routes it will operate from 2016, and will decide once it has considered codesharing options with airline partners in both destinations.
"It is not 100% where we going to fly yet. We have strong underlying demand from China and we also have strong demand historically from Japan so we will make business case and need to make up our mind if we fly either to Shanghai or to Tokyo," said CEO Stefan Pichler.
Pichler says China is obviously an attractive and still growing market but Fiji has also flown to Japan in the past.
He said securing an airline partner for the route is essential and he has already started discussions with other carriers.
"We don’t want to do trial and error; when we do something it has to work," Pichler said, adding that I would have to hit the ground running as a profitable route straight away.
