New SeaFrance ferry delayed

SeaFrance has put back the introduction of a new ferry on the Dover-Calais route by almost three weeks.

The 1,200-passenger SeaFrance Molière, claimed to be the longest ferry on the short sea channel route, will enter service on July 22 instead of July 3 as originally planned.

Formerly known as the Jean Nicoli, SeaFrance Molière was acquired by the French cross-channel ferry company in April. It has been undergoing a refit at the shipyards in Dunkirk since then.

Managing director Robin Wilkins said: “SeaFrance has invested €15 million in the refit, during which the new ship has been adapted to the requirements of the short sea route.

“We have additionally redesigned her interior to the high quality specification reflected in our other two superferries, SeaFrance Berlioz and SeaFrance Rodin.

“The SeaFrance Molière will offer two bars, two restaurants, a boutique and dedicated professional drivers’ facilities for freight and tourism.

“Tourism customers who have made reservations on the SeaFrance Molière will all be personally informed of any schedule change.

“We will also ensure that our coach, group and freight clients are notified of the new launch date.”

From July 22, the SeaFrance fleet will consist of:

–          SeaFrance Molière: 1,200 passengers, 110 trucks or 480 cars

–          SeaFrance Berlioz: 1,900 passengers, 120 trucks or 700 cars

–          SeaFrance Rodin: 1,900 passengers, 120 trucks or 700 cars

–          SeaFrance Nord-Pas de Calais: 100 passengers, 85 trucks

–          SeaFrance Cezanne: 250 passengers, 78 trucks

The company carried 3,733,500 passengers, 722,600 cars, 22,000 coaches and 760,600 trucks last year.
