New short term let rules announced
The UK government has unveiled new measures to limit the impact of short-term holiday lets.
Announced by Michael Gove, the new rules will help local communities wield more control over housing availability.
As well as a mandatory national register, it will require planning permission for some new short-term lets.
“Short-term lets can play an important role in the UK’s tourism economy,” Gove said.
“But in some areas, too many local families and young people feel they are being shut out of the housing market.”
“This will allow local communities to take back control and strike the right balance between protecting the visitor economy and ensuring local people get the homes they need.”
The measures will also address the anti-social impacts of too many holiday lets in certain areas, while ensuring local people are not priced out of their local communities.
Owners will still be able to let out their own main or sole home for up to 90 nights per year without planning permission.
“The Government is committed to getting the balance right to ensure both local people and our visitor economy can thrive,” Tourism minister Julia Lopez said.
