Wednesday, 25 Jun, 2008 0

The second edition of Sacred Places North America: 108 Destinations by Brad Olsen (CCC Publishing, $19.95) explores well-known and obscure spiritual sites, from prehistoric stone structures in New England to Indian mounds in Illinois, Iowa and Mississippi.

Western entries include petroglyphs at Utah’s Zion National Park and cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado.  Christian pilgrimage sites in Eastern Canada include Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal and the Basilica of Sainte-Anne de Beaupre, the “Lourdes of the New World,” located on the St. Lawrence River north of Quebec City.

Among historic abbeys mentioned are New Melleray Abbey in Eastern Iowa and Central Kentucky’s Gethsemani Abbey, the oldest monastery in the United States (1848) still in continuous use. Also described are the Atlanta birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. and Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis. [415-933-8132, cccpublishing.com]
