New ways to see Westchester County this summer
The Westchester County (NY) Office of Tourism suggests you take a new look at New York’s “Golden Apple” destination this summer, by setting out on several new themed travel itineraries designed for individual travelers and groups.
Three new Getaway Itineraries suit a variety of interests for those who want to explore this Hudson River Valley destination in a new way. The “Movie Locations” itinerary recommends film sites open to the public; “Arts and Parks” is a trip through a variety of galleries and outdoor art installations; and the “Epicurean Experience” suggests two days of culinary adventure.
“We’ve taken the work out of planning a summer getaway,” said Margo Jones, Director of the Westchester County Office of Tourism. “Your weekend is wonderful – complete with overnight accommodations in a first class hotel, and your choice of fine dining experiences.”
A short description of each new itinerary follows:
Movie Location Itinerary
Westchester County is the busiest movie production center outside of New York City, with nearly 30 box office successes filmed here in recent years. This two-day itinerary recommends several film locations that are open to the public, such as Playland Amusement Park in Rye (“Big,” 1987); Alder Manor in Yonkers (“A Beautiful Mind,” 2001); or Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River (“Pollock,” 2001).
Additional options include a visit to an attraction such as the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, or the Westchester Film Festival each March.
Arts and the parks
Art appreciation is a way of life in Westchester County, home to scores of art galleries and several museums, many with outdoor art installations. Picasso tapestries, O’Keeffe oil paintings, Cropsey landscapes, Warhol pop art, Calder sculpture and Pollock’s abstract canvases are all found here. This itinerary provides time to browse through a variety of art galleries, and visits to outdoor art installations located within several parks, including Lasdon Park and Arboretum in Somers and the Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem.
Additional options allow for time to attend exciting arts and crafts events, such as the renowned Annual Armonk Outdoor Art Show in October.
The Epicurean experience
This two-day culinary adventure includes: fine dining at acclaimed restaurants such as Equus in Tarrytown; cooking lessons at ChefWorks/MacMenamin’s Grill in New Rochelle; wine and beer tastings in Pleasantville; shopping in international food shops; and an unforgettable tour of Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Pocantico Hills, where the “farm-to-table” movement means that every day, the very food served in the restaurant inside comes directly from the ground outside.
Additional tours of prime Shopping stops and a two-day exploration of Mansions and Estates have also been refreshed and updated with new sites. Itineraries are also available for Family Fun, Garden Tours, and the African American Heritage Trail.
