New York Architecture cruise causes a buzz

One of the hottest tickets in New York these days features a Broadway star of a different sort: the buildings make up the Great White Way and the boroughs of New York.

The buzz is about a unique boat tour by the American Institute of Architects and the Classic Harbor Line that shows off Manhattan from the water, through the eyes of the architects that built it.

The point, says the AIA’s New York chapter, is to focus on the great structures that make New York unique, how they link the city together, and how they change over time.

The three-hour Architectural Tour, aboard a 1920s style yacht, circles the entire island of Manhattan on the Hudson, East and Harlem Rivers, slipping under 18 bridges.

"We’re the signature architecture cruise, the only one in New York City," said Classic Harbor spokesperson Meghan Mayhart. "All our guides are from AIA and the cruise has been quite a success; we just keep adding more departures because it’s so popular."

The tour is offered on most Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

It sails out of Chelsea Piers; tickets are $76 and include one complimentary drink and hors d’ouvres.

The yacht holds 44 people on cool days and 56 on warm ones, when folks sit outside, Mayhart said.

There are no group rates, but groups can charter the whole yacht.
