New York takes action on hotel ‘hidden fees’
New York City is banning hotel hidden fees ahead of an expected influx of foreign visitors for the FIFA World Cup.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s new administration announced every cent of hotel rates must be fully disclosed up front.
This includes all mandatory fees such as ‘resort fees’ and ‘hospitality fees.’
It is thought this could save travelers around $46 million.
Mayor Mamdani announced the full upfront price must be disclosed, citing more than 300 complaints about hidden fees and unexpected credit card holds last year made to the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection
It forms part of the Hotel Service Disruption which requires hotels to inform guests of any service changes during a stay.
States around the country, including Texas, have taken action against hotels chains and travel platforms for advertising hotel rates without the hidden resort fees.
