New Yorker arrested for pointing laser at aircraft
A Bronx man has been arrested for pointed a laser at aircraft taking off and landing at New York LaGuardia Airport.
He was detained by the NYPD’s Aviation Unit after an Air Canada pilot and two police officers operating a helicopter were treated for eye injuries, the NYPDnews website reports.
A Delta Air Lines flight and a smaller plane were also hit by the laser, the police said.
After being alerted by Federal Aviation Administration officials, police traced the laser beam to a Bronx apartment and after questioning, arrested 36-year old Frank Egan.
The investigation is ongoing and the man has so far been charged with assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon.
Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal felony which can result in up to five years in prison.
