New Zealand North Island volcano erupts
The eruption of a volcano on New Zealand’s North Island has stranded hundreds of travellers.
Roads were closed and flights cancelled following the eruption of Mt Tongariro, its first eruption for more than a century.
Rocks and ash were thrown up to a kilometre from the mountain.
Air New Zealand flights to Gisborne, Rotorua, Taupo and Napier and Palmerston North, were delayed or cancelled following the eruption, affecting flights to and from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Air New Zealand general manager of airline operations and safety David Morgan said the airline is making adjustments to its flight routes and altitudes to ensure its aircraft remain clear of ash.
There have been no reports of injuries or damage although authorities are keeping a close watch and have not ruled our further volcanic activity over the next few weeks.
